(This drawing of the Jerome C. Davis Farm on Putah
Creek, executed on stone by George H. Baker, was printed
in the State Agricultural Society Transactions of 1858 when the Davis
property was given the Premium Award for the best stock farm in California)
It contains 12,000 acres, having a front on Putah River of 3 miles, 7, 680 acres of
which are under fence, divided into eight fields, the largest of which contains 3,000 acres and the smallest, twenty-five.
"The fences on this place are of redwood, the posts large, the planks one and one-fourth inches thick and eight inches wide.
About on-half is five planks high, the other three planks, with ditch two by three feet on each side, and all the fence is regarded
as entirely secure against any kind of stock. These two kinds of fence make an aggregate of more than 21 miles. Two fields,
containing 1,200 acres, are now seeded with alfalfa, or Chile clover (which has proved itself capable of withstanding
our severest droughts) and is doing remarkably well."
"The buildings on this farm are as follows" Dwelling-house 50x30 feet with wing 24x80, all two stories high, well
built and thoroughly finished; horse barn 60x90 feet, with 18-foot posts; cow barn 40x100 feet, shed 15x150; two dairy-houses,
respectively 12x12 and 16x60; steam mill and manufacturing shops 10x120 feet; engine house for steam pump about 10x12."
"The pump is capable of raising 600 gallons per minute from low-water mark in the river, 20 feet below
the surface of the ground, to the tank 16 feet above, thus affording 864,000 gallons every 24 hours,
an amount sufficient for all family purposes, the watering of stock and all necessary irrigation."
"The stock connected with this farm consists of 2,000 head of cattle, 210 horses and mules, two superior imported jacks of
Maltese blood, 600 sheep and 150 hogs."
"The roadster (trotter) and draught (draft) horses, the shorthorned (Durham or Shorthorn) cattle, the Southdown sheep and Irish Grazier swine,
bred by Mr. Davis, have few if any superiors on the Pacific coast."
"The dairy consists of 250 milch cows, from which they now (June 29) have on hand in the dairyhouses 120 cheeses,
which will average 60 pounds each."
"The increase of stock may be judged of by the fact that the proprietor brands 700 calves this year.
This will appear to breeders a very disporportionate number of calves from only 2,00 head; but it is explained in
the fact that the slaughtering for one of the principal markets in the city is very largely from his herd."
"The family vegetable garden is in keeping with all other departments of the immense establishment, covering several acres.
The orchard numbers 3,000 trees of choice varieties of fruit, and the vineyard 6,000 vines, already in bearing producing grapes of
a very superior quality."
"There is a nursery containing 65,000 trees and vines of a great number of varieties for planting on the place."
"During the present year he has raised 700 acres of grain and cut hay enough for the wants of his farm."
"The Executive Committee having awarded to this place the highest premium for best improved and funished stock farm of the
first class, a more extended notice might seem to have been demanded, but our limits forbid." (Recorded 17, 1858, p. 235) |
