Notes
General:
Billie finally married a guy--I can't think of his name. She went wth a guy named Bill Bower or Bauer . The family liked him--but he stepped out on her when she visited Nebr--so when she heard about it, she dumped him,---Ended up marrying this other yo-yo who nobody cared much about. After Grandpa died, she dumped him too--but foolishly gave him half of what she inherited. Mary always said that Ed Sullivan was crazy about Billie--but he was a lush and she didn't think he had much future!! RIGHT!

Notes
General:
In 1850 Elijah was living with his parents in Jackson County. He lived in Kentucky from 1855 until returning to Jackson County in 1858. Elijah loved to gamble and is found in the Jackson County Court Minutes Book K (1855-1858) as being fined $10.00 for gaming along with brothers Henry and James. He also made it into Book L (1859) on pages 619 and 646 for gambling. "One of the traits of most of the Chiles boys was that they were always ready to take a gamble. Whether it was with money, horses, cards, mules, wagon trains, politics, war, new lands or just adventure -- they were always in the forefront." Joanne Chiles Eakin

In the 1860 and 1870 census of Jackson County, Elijah is living in Jackson County, Missouri. In the 1870 census, his parents and two family Negroes, Jack (63) and Ellen (37), are living with him. He lived in Grayson County, Texas in 1883 and later in Dallas County, Texas

Notes
General:
On Sept. 23, 1873, Elijah was sent to Independence Square to Noland House, a hotel, to tell his father to come home. His mother would have gone but was not feeling well and was 6 months pregnant. The Kansas City Times gives the following account: "Tuesday Morning, Sept. 23, 1873 -- J. J. Chiles was killed instantly by the shot (from James Peacock0 which struck him in the face and pieced the lower portion of the upper brain. The little son of Mr. Chiles. . .was shot from behind (by Charles Peacock) the ball entering the small of the back and lodged in the abdomen. Mr. Chiles also received a shot in the side from the pistol of Charles Peacock, while he was struggling with James Peacock, who at the time received a dangerous shot through the spine from the pistol of the son of Mr. Chiles who sprang to his father's assistance with the fury of a young tiger, and returned Charles Peacock's shot which had just pierced his father's body by shooting him in the leg or thigh. Charles Peacock immediately mounted his horse and rode out of town, and has not returned when our reporter left last evening. The wound of Deputy Peacock is a serious one, but his physician says he will recover. The little son of Mr. Chiles lays at the Noland House in very critical condition. He is bleeding internally, and suffers much pain, but bears up with the bravery and nerve of an Indian warrior, scarcely uttering a moan in his agony. . . . Last night Prosecuting Attorney R. L. Yeager received a dispatch calling him to the bedside of the little boy Elijah Chiles, to take his deposition concerning the shooting. Mr. Yeager left on the midnight train."

Elijah who was partically blind, upon seeing his father was dead, knelt beside him and cried out, "Oh Poppy, Poppy!" Two days later, he lay dying, believing that he had killed his father's murderer. His Uncle Elijah Chiles was with him to the last and little Elijah spoke to him, "Uncle Lige, if my eyes hadn't been so bad, I'd a-got the other one too, but I was afraid I'd hit some of Poppy's friends." Little Lige was buried along side his Poppy in Woodlawn Cemetery.
