Notes
General:
A list of settlers of the Territory within Prince Edward County prior to formation of that Countr from Amelia in 1753 includes Henry Chiles 20 Aug. 1741 patent for 1476 acres on the appomattox River. Portions of this 1476 acres were later sold by his heirs, Paul, Henry and John.

Henry lived in King William County and eventually relocated to Amelia County.
Will in Amelia County, 1746

Over the period of 50 years, Henry acquired many hundreds of acres to the west and south of the area where he was born.

Henry lived to see his children landowners along the upper reaches of the Staunton River at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Son Paul and daughter, Ann, cose homesites with a view of the Peaks of Otter to the northwest. Henry's children and their spouses built fine plantations on the land first seen in 1642 by their great, great grandfather, Colonel Walter Chiles.

It has not been established that all of the lands listed under Henry Chiles were this particular individual, as there were 4 Henry Chiles within the family at this time. All four Henry Chiles owned large parcels of land.

Henry's last will and testament showed well over 4000 acres of land in his estate. A note of interest regarding the will: It was written on 20 June 1746, but the date it was presented to the Amelia County Court was 20 March 1746. There was some controversy about the precise execution of this will by Henry's wife, Ann, and son, Paul.
Research:
Patent Book 12 , pg 209 - Henry Chiles of King William County for 400 acres of New Land in Hnrico County. - 6 May 1725 - 40 Shillings

Patent Book #13, pg 225 - Henry Chiles of King William County 400 acres of New Land in Henrico County - this was perhaps the survey portion of the 1725 patent book. 13 Oct. 1725

Patent Book #14, pg 407 - William Mills, 400 acres of new land in Goochland County on the borders of Licking Hole Creek adjoingin Samuel Colemand and Henry Chiles and lines of Scott and Kerby. 11 Apti 1732. It is of note that the names of Coleman and Mills were married to Chiles daughters.

Journal of the Council of Virginia in Executive Session of 1738: Petition for leave to take up his Majesties Land were read and granted in 1738 to Michael Holland, Henry Chiles, Alexander Tynson, James Walker and Joseph Walker, 10,000 acres in Brunswick County on the head of Falling River ( in present Campbell County.) to begin at the said Tynson's Camp in one or more Tracts.
Another portion of the Journal states" To Henry Childs 2000 acres in Amelia County about 2 miles above the mountains 9 probably in presnt Campbell County)
Yet another entry in the Journal states: To Henry Childs, eighteen hundred (1800) acres in goochland County - this most likely being the survey of the original grant of 2000, which after survey was a smaller parcel.

Notes
General:
Went to high school with Harry S. Truman and Bess Wallace. They became life long friends. He was a natural for politics because of his charismatic personality. He served as deputy County Clerk and retired after serving many terms as Jackson County Treasurer. His office in the Court House was across the hall from Judge Truman.

Henry had unusual hobbies. One was woodworking, specializing in carved canes and gavels. He was sent wood from all over the world. One gavel presented to a great nephew was carved from wood from a tree under which Jessie James had been buried. The other hobby was the raising of peonies on his farm in eastern Jackson County. Nieces and nephews remember well working on the peony farm and many churches around Jackson County were decorated with these beautiful flowers.

Henry lived next door to his four sisters, called the Aunts, and after Virgie died they helped him raise Becky and Bobbie Carr Chiles who were still at home.

This writer remembers sharing Christmas breakfast with Uncle Henry at the Aunts' house on numerous occasions. As I recall, he held the record for eating the most biscuits. He had a big smile and welcoming arms for all the little Chiles' gathered around the Aunts' table.
