Notes
General:
Henry Chiles was elected a 2nd Lt. in Capt. Waldo's Company A, Col. Alexander W. Doniphan's 1st Regiment of Missouri Mounted Volunteers in the Mexican War. Volunteers were accepted for service into service for a term of 12 months from 6 June 1846 to 22 June 1847 when they were discharged at New Orleans. Among the 101 men from Jackson County were Henry's cousins Christopher C. Hamilton and Henry C. Riggs as well as his brother Elijah J. Chiles and brother-in-law Richard S. Phelps. It is said that Captain Waldo gave one order at the Battle of Sacramento which took place on 28 Feb. 1847 some 245 miles south of El Pasa, Texas in a place called Sacramento Pass. "Shoot low! Shoot low boys! If you break one man's leg, it will take two men to carry him off!"

Henry was in New Mexico in 1883 and in Paul's Valley Indian Territory, Oklahoma (about 50 miles north of Grayson County, Texas) in 1890.
