General:
Morton Perrin Chiles, Jr. graduated from Central (Methodist) College in Fayette, Missouri with a B.A. in English. He received his law degree from St. Louis University. Joined the F.B.I., serving as Special Agent, Supervisor, and Special Agent In Charge. During the Truman Administration, he acted as a liaison between Harry S. Truman and J. Edgar Hoover. While serving in the F.B.I., Mort and wife Sue and family lived in Charlotte, N. C., Baltimore Maryland, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, LA, and San Antonio, Texas. Mort retired from the F.B.I. at 37 years (1939-1977) of service after being involved in the arrest of over 700 criminals. Mort was known for his expert marksmanship and sound leadership. He and wife Sue spent their last days dividing their time between their home in San Antonio and their vacation home, "Sumochi", near Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

Mort was a great story teller and many said that he followed in the footsteps of his Great Grandfather, Henry Clay "Bruz" Chiles.

General:
After graduating from high school in 1907, Mort worked for a year in a Texas lumber camp. After he returned to Jackson County, Missouri, he was a farmer and stockman, specializing for a time in the breeding of short-horned cattle. He later shift to general farming and stock raising. 1919 -1920 served on the Democratic Central Committee for Jackson County, Missouri -- from Atherton. Mort ran the County Farm for Jackson County and retired from that job. Mort was known for his industry, integrity, sobriety, and progressiveness, qualities learned from his father and other members of his family. He and his wife were active members of the Christian Church.
