Notes
General:
Stephen was the son of Adela, the daughter of William I, and Stephen, the Count of Blois. Stephen was contested for the throne by his cousin, Matilda. Matilda was the daughter and sole legitmate heir of Henry I. When Henry died, Matilda was away from England, and Stephen seized power on the 22nd of December, 1135.
Most nobles preferred Stephen over Matilda, but he was unable to successfully stop her by claiming the throne. In 1141, she captured Stephen and planned her own coronation. Stephen's wife, also Matilda, drove Matilda from the city. During this she was able to capture Robert of Gloucester, Matilda's (the cousin) commander. Stephen and Robert were used in a prisoner exchange and Stephen was recoronated.
Matilda escaped from London over the snow with four other captives, crossing the ice covered rivers in her night clothes.
After Robert left England, Stephen recaptured his cousin, Matilda. Once more, she escaped. The war between them continued until the death of Robert of Gloucester in 1147. At this time Stephen had to pick his heir. He preferred his eldest son, Eustace, but Matlida pressured her son, Henry, Lord of Normandy and Anjou, on him.
The English nobles thought that the only way to end the hostilities was to recognize Henry as the successor. In 1153, the Treaty of Westminster was signed. It declared that Stephen would reign until his death, and Henry would succeed.
After eighteen years of war, Stephen was finally able to reign in peace. However, the death of his first-born son made the whole struggle a waste. He died later in the year and was succeeded by the longest dynasty in English history, the Plantagenets.
