The Skinner family from whom Azubah descended first arrive in the Colony of New Jersey when Richard Skinner was assigned as an assistant to the Govenor. Richard was born on the Isle of Jersey. After his arrival in America, Richard met and fell in love with a young indentured servant. Susannah Poulain had been born in St. Germain en laye, Seine et Oise, France. The young couple was married and live Woodbridge, New Jersey Later their descendent would move to Loudoun County, Virginia and on to Clark County, Kentucky. The signature names of this family are: Cornelius, Phineas, and Azubah.
Azubah was trained as a practical nurse as was the custom of many young women of her background. Her kindness and healing powers made her greatly loved by her neighbors. After the death of Frank, Azubah became known as the "Widow Chiles". She was the matriarch of the family and lead them safely through the horrors of the War Between the States. When her home was threatened with burning by a group of hooded men, Azubah stared them down, reminding them of her past acts of kindness to their families. The men left in shame and her home remained fire free. She kept her dignity when forced to cook for Union soldiers who entered her home telling her that they had just killed her son. She knew it was not her son but her heart ached for the loss of another mother. When finally forced to leave her home, Azubah lead those remaining in the home to Platte County and the home of her Skinner relatives where they would be safe until after the War. When the family returned, they were relieved to find the home still standing.
