Halifax,on the 23d; and on the 8th October, they crossed "the height of
land," whichdivides the Semees of the Maine and Canadian rivers, and
reached the head ofthe Chaudiere. They returned to the van of the army
on the 17th, having beenabsent twenty-five days, and having suffered
great privation by want of provisions.
