General:
Sue was a Methodist Missionary for the Methodist Church in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1883, she founded the Central Mission (Boyle Mission). She worked in the mission until she broker her hip. She was in her 90's.

In 1886, Sue founded the first Circle of Kings Daughters west of New York. She helped to raise her nephew Abner John Adair and remained close to him throughout her life.

Family legend has it that Sue was upset during the Civil War when she saw horses being stabled in a church in Independence, Missouri. She and a group of friends drove the horses out of the church and spent the night locked in the sanctuary. The next day she and the group surrendered and were put under house arrest for a month.

General:
Attended Central (Methodist) College in Fayette, Missouri where she met and married Morton Perrin Chiles, Jr. Received her B.A. degree in Social Work from St. Louis University. She worked as a Social Worker at the Methodist Children's Home in St. Louis. In 1950, Sue served as Children's Director at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas. She later taught first grade for many years for the Alamo Heights Independent School District, retiring from that position. Sue was a member of D.A.R., P.E.O., F.B.I. Wives Auxillery, and Texas Teachers' Association.

In 1932, Sue Ellis Adair served as Maid of Honor for the State of Missouri at the Reunion of the Confederate Veterans in Richmonde, Virginia. Sue had a beautiful voice and sang in many choirs through out her life.
